A leader of the Hong Kong New Wave in the 1980s, Ann Hui might be less of a household name than some of her male colleagues Tsui Hark and Wong Kar Wai, even though her films are the most frequently awarded productions in the history of the Hong Kong Film Awards, and she received an Honorary Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2020. Much of Hui’s most acclaimed work are personal films that deal with cultural displacement and migration. This month’s short film program by Electric Shadows also reflects the longing and the worries of wandering people looking for a future home.
